Jack's Free Range Chickens
Jack's parents had chickens when he was a child growing up in Porters Lake, NS. He has fond memories of them running around in the yard and collecting the fresh eggs. He has not so fond memories of cleaning the coop! Cynthia had no experience with chickens before moving to Moorbern, so it's been a steep learning curve for her. For a number of years, Jack has wanted to return to an easier way of living and having chickens was one of the things he most wanted. When the decision was made to move to Scotch Village, it did not take long for the wood shed to be converted to a chicken coop, and for Jack to make friends with the locals who knew all about raising them.
The summer of 2014 saw the first "meat kings" at Moorbern. Jack bought them as day-old chicks and raised them with care, allowing them to run freely around the property. He connected with Cogmagun Poultry Processing, a provincially inspected facility less than 10 minutes away, who processed the birds with as much care as Jack had shown them. In 2016, we built a new chicken barn to allow us to increase the number of chickens we raise. As a Licensed Free Range chicken producer, we abide by all the rules and regulations placed on us by Chicken Farmers of NS. It varies from year to year but we usually grow between 1500-2000 chickens annually, between Spring and Fall.
In August 2014 the first "brown layers" came to Moorbern. They too were raised from day-old chicks and they now follow Jack around as he does chores on the property. Our 8 lovely hens began giving us the most delicious fresh eggs the 3rd week of January 2015. There really is nothing better. Since 2015, our flock of laying hens has grown and we usually have between 30 and 40. Farm fresh eggs still are the very best!
